February 23, 2017

BAGHDAD, Feb 23 — Iraqi forces today stormed Mosul airport and looked poised to fully retake it from the Islamic State group, the latest landmark in a four-month-old offensive to recapture the city. Police raid flats in search for Berlin truck attack suspect Anis Amri

December 22, 2016

Police scrambling to find the Tunisian man suspected of being the driver of the truck that drove into a Berlin Christmas market on Monday night have carried out raids overnight in the German capital and Dortmund. Germany’s state prosecutor denied media reports that four “personal contacts” of the suspect Anis Amri had been arrested during the police operation. “We are not aware of any arrests,” a spokesperson told Reuters on Thursday morning. Amri, 24, is thought to have temporarily stayed at the Dortmund apartment which the German police raided around 6.30am. In Berlin, police raided flats in the city’s Kreuzberg, Moabit and Prenzlauer Berg districts at 4am.

John Glenn, first US astronaut to orbit Earth, dies aged 95

December 8, 2016

John Glenn, a former astronaut and US senator for almost quarter of a century, has died in Ohio aged 95. Glenn died on Thursday afternoon at the James cancer hospital in Columbus, according to Hank Wilson of the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. Ohio governor John Kasich also confirmed the news on Twitter. An Ohio State University spokesman had announced on Wednesday that Glenn had been admitted to the hospital more than a week earlier. However, his illness was not disclosed and the spokesman had cautioned that it might not be cancer. Glenn became a national hero in 1962 when he became the first American to orbit the Earth, one year after the Soviet Union had sent their own man into orbit, Yuri Gagarin. Glenn was the third US astronaut in space and the first American in orbit, circling the Earth three times. He received a distinguished service medal from then-president John F Kennedy upon his return and was greeted by millions for a ticker-tape parade in New York City.

Nine hurt, suspect killed in ‘terrifying’ Ohio State attack

November 28, 2016

A man crashed his vehicle into pedestrians on the Ohio State campus in Columbus on Monday, then slashed students with a butcher knife before being fatally shot by a university police officer, authorities said. Nine people were rushed to hospitals and one was in critical condition, according to university Police Chief Craig Stone. The drama began shortly before 10 a.m. ET, when the suspect deliberately drove up over the curb and began his attack, Stone said. He said the officer arrived about a minute later and engaged the suspect. “We are very fortunate that an OSUPD officer was there and took quick action,” Stone said.

Do Guns Make A Nation Safe?

Recently I came across a video by ScIQ, which is a group linked with The Young Turks, which made some rather odd statements regarding safety and gun ownership. This is what Jayde Lovell had to say in her video:

“…So it turns out that our confidence in guns is woefully missguided, the evidence overwhelimingley shows that guns leave everbody less safe including their owners and this is not my opinion, these are the facts…” ~ Jayde Lovell, ScIQ

Jayde Lovell goes on to say:

“One study published in the reputable American Journal of Medicine looked at 27 developed countries to see if there was a relationship between guns and safety. They found no correlation between guns per capita per country and the crime rate meaning that if you add more guns to the population you don’t do much to affect the amount of crime, but what they found was a significant positive correlation between the number of guns in the population and firearm related deaths, basically the more guns the more people that die of gun injuries” ~ Jayde Lovell, ScIQ

Ironically ScIQ provided a link to an Harvard Law study called “Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide” which goes against what she is saying in her video and here is what I found in that study within the first few pages:
