Suspicious devices found near New Jersey station
September 19, 2016
A suspicious device found near a New Jersey railway station exploded as a bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot, officials say. It was one of up to five devices found in backpack inside a rubbish bin near the station in Elizabeth, according to the city’s mayor. No-one was hurt. The discovery came after three attacks at the weekend – bombs in New York and New Jersey, and stabbings in Minnesota. The explosion in New York’s Chelsea area injured 29 people. In Elizabeth, New Jersey, police detonated a device on Monday following concerns it was a live bomb. “That was not a controlled explosion,” said Mayor Christian Bollwage, adding that the blast happened as a robot examining a device cut a wire.
The bag containing multiple devices was picked out of a bin by two men who thought it could contain something of value. “They started to examine the backpack is when they found the wires and the pipes and they dropped the backpack, walked around the corner, went in to police headquarters and notified us right away,” he said. In New York City, the FBI said it had stopped a “vehicle of interest” in Brooklyn on Sunday but made no arrests.

Multiple ‘explosive devices’ found at N.J. train station amid rising terrorism fears
September 19, 2016
NEW YORK – Authorities in New York took “a number of people” into custody in connection with Saturday’s bombing in Manhattan, just as their counterparts in New Jersey worked to render safe “multiple improvised explosive devices” discovered at a train station in Elizabeth just across from Staten Island. Though officials did not immediately say whether the two developments were related, they sowed further concern about terrorism in the region and across the country. Police already had been investigating three weekend incidents — explosions in New York and New Jersey and a stabbing attack in Minnesota — that took place within a 12-hour period on Saturday.
About 8:45 p.m. Sunday, the FBI and the New York Police Department stopped what the bureau’s New York Field office called a “vehicle of interest” in the Manhattan bombing investigation, and took people into custody. As of early Monday, authorities said no one had been charged with a crime, and the investigation was continuing. An FBI spokeswoman, Kelly Langmesser, gave no further details on those detained. But the Associated Press, citing government and law enforcement officials, reported that five people were questioned. Law enforcement also combed an area around an Elizabeth, N.J., train station where a backpack with “multiple improvised explosive devices” was found.

Device near New Jersey train station explodes while FBI investigates
September 19, 2016
ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — A suspicious device found in a trash can near a New Jersey train station exploded early Monday as a bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot, officials said. Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said that the FBI was working to disarm one of five devices found in the same bag, which was discovered in a trash can by two men around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, near the Elizabeth train station on New Jersey Transit’s Northeast Corridor rail line. The men had reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of the package, Bollwage said.
There was no immediate report of injuries or damage. A message left with the FBI wasn’t immediately returned. The mayor warned that other explosions were expected. Here is a look at the explosion. NJ Transit service was suspended early Monday between Newark Liberty Airport and Elizabeth, and New Jersey-bound Amtrak trains were being held at New York Penn Station, officials said, while New York-bound Amtrak trains were being held in Trenton.

Mayor: One of five devices found in N.J. city explodes
September 19, 2016
ELIZABETH, N.J. — This city’s mayor says one of five devices found in a backpack near a train station exploded while a bomb squad robot was attempting to disarm it. Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said the blew up shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday. The FBI was leading the investigation and working to disarm the other four devices. Bollwage told CBS News the explosion was unintentional. There were no reports of injuries. Bollwage said to expect more detonations. He added that there was no damage to the train infrastructure nearby. Bollwage also said police were reviewing surveillance from a nearby bar.
He said two men called police and reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of a package after finding it in trash around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. But, he told CBS News, the men didn’t see who dropped the device in the trash. The men, who were scavengers, left the package under the tracks and ran to a police station to report what they had found, says CBS New York. New Jersey Transit says service has been suspended between Newark Liberty Airport and Elizabeth. New York’s emergency management department says New Jersey-bound Amtrak trains are being held at New York’s Penn Station, interrupting some service on the busy Northeast Corridor.
