Nine hurt, suspect killed in ‘terrifying’ Ohio State attack
November 28, 2016
A man crashed his vehicle into pedestrians on the Ohio State campus in Columbus on Monday, then slashed students with a butcher knife before being fatally shot by a university police officer, authorities said. Nine people were rushed to hospitals and one was in critical condition, according to university Police Chief Craig Stone. The drama began shortly before 10 a.m. ET, when the suspect deliberately drove up over the curb and began his attack, Stone said. He said the officer arrived about a minute later and engaged the suspect. “We are very fortunate that an OSUPD officer was there and took quick action,” Stone said.
Stone did not reveal the attacker’s identity. Multiple media reports, including NBC News and the Associated Press, citing sources who requested anonymity, described him as an 18-year-old native of Somalia living in the United States as a legal permanent resident. NBC said he was a student at the school. Columbus Police Chief Chief Kim Jacobs, whose officers also responded to the attack, said terrorism had not been ruled out. “That’s why our federal partners are here and helping,” she said. Homeland security adviser Lisa Monaco briefed President Obama on the incident, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. He said FBI agents in Columbus were assisting with the investigation.

Ohio attacker Abdul Ali Artan was ‘Somali refugee’
November 28, 2016
A man who injured nine people, one critically, in a rampage on Monday morning at Ohio State University was of Somali descent, say US officials. Abdul Razak Ali Artan, 18, rammed his car into a group of pedestrians on campus then got out and began stabbing people before police shot him dead. Police Chief Kim Jacobs said they were investigating whether it was a terrorist attack. The FBI joined the police response at the 60,000-student campus in Columbus. Somali-born Artan was living in the US as a legal permanent resident, unnamed officials told AP news agency. Law enforcement officials quoted by NBC News said the attacker had left Somalia with his family in 2007, and lived in Pakistan before resettling two years ago in the US.
Asked at a news conference whether it could have been a terrorist act, Police Chief Jacobs said: “I think we have to consider that it is.” He added: “Obviously with the purposeful intent that was noticed – driving on the sidewalk – we’re going look at it from the potential that it was planned.” The Ohio State incident began at 10:00 local time on Monday when a vehicle jumped the kerb at the campus, striking pedestrians near Watts Hall, the science and engineering building.

Attacker Plows Into Crowd, Stabs People At Ohio State Campus
November 28, 2016
COLUMBUS, Ohio (KDKA/AP) — A man plowed his car into a group of pedestrians at Ohio State University and then got out and began stabbing people with a butcher knife before he was shot and killed by an officer Monday morning, campus police said. A U.S. official identified the suspect as a man of Somali descent. The official identified Abdul Razak Ali Artan as the now-deceased suspect. He was born in Somalia and living in the United States as a legal permanent resident. It was unclear when Artan came to the U.S. Director of public safety reported that the attacker was a student at the school.
Nine people were hurt, one critically, and Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said police were investigating whether it was a terrorist attack. The details emerged after a morning of confusion and conflicting reports that began with the university issuing a series of tweets warning students that there was an “active shooter” on campus near the engineering building and that they should “run, hide, fight.” Numerous police vehicles and ambulances converged on the 60,000-student campus, and authorities blocked off roads.

Ohio State attack: Police identify suspect as first-year student
November 28, 2016
Local law-enforcement officers have confirmed the name of a man who they say injured at least nine people on the Ohio State University campus this morning by running a car into a group of people, then slashing others with a butcher knife. Less than a minute after the attack, an OSU police officer shot and killed the man. The man has been indentified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, who was a first-year student at Ohio State. Records show he lived on the West Side of Columbus. Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad currently are searching an apartment there.
Despite rumors of a second suspect, police and campus officials say there was one person involved in the attack. The attack happened outside of Watts Hall at West 19th Street west of College Road. Earlier in the morning, the building had been evacuated because of a report of a gas leak. It’s unclear if that was related to the attack or if that’s why people were outside at the time of the attack. OSU President Michael Drake said training by university personnel kept things from being worse. “We live in an unstable world unfortunately,” he said. Drake and others spoke outside Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. Wexner Medical Center treated five patients: two were stabbed, two were hit by the car and one who hid after the attack and just arrived. The last victim’s injuries were being assessed.

Suspect dead, 11 injured following stabbing attack on Ohio State campus
November 28, 2016
OLUMBUS (WCMH) — A man plowed his car into a group of pedestrians at Ohio State University and began stabbing people with a butcher knife Monday before he was shot to death by a police officer. Police said they are investigating whether it was a terrorist attack. 11 people were hurt, one critically. The attacker was identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a Somali-born legal permanent resident of the U.S., according to a U.S. official wasn’t authorized to discuss details of the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The FBI and other agencies joined the investigation. Ohio State Police Chief Craig Stone said that the assailant deliberately drove over a curb outside a classroom building, got out of the vehicle and began to cut people in a crowd with a butcher knife. A police officer who was nearby because of a gas leak arrived on the scene and shot the driver in less than a minute. “A police officer was on the scene within a minute and killed the assailant. “He engaged the suspect and eliminated the threat,” Stone said. Officials said the attack was clearly deliberate and may have been planned in advance. “This was done on purpose,” Stone said.

Nine people hospitalized, suspect killed after attack on Ohio State campus
November 28, 2016
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A lone attacker using a car and then a butcher knife injured several people Monday morning in what authorities described as a planned assault on the Ohio State University campus. Nine people were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition, and police said a suspect in the attack was shot and killed at the scene. Police said the attacker drove a car over a curb shortly before 10 a.m. and hit a group of pedestrians outside of Watts Hall before getting out and using a large knife to slash at people. Within a minute, a university police officer shot and killed the suspect, who has not been identified by officials.
“He engaged the suspect,” said Craig Stone, chief of the Ohio State University police. “Commands were not followed, and the officer did what he had to do to stop the threat.” Stone said it was “too early to say” whether it was a terrorist attack but said it was clear “this was done on purpose.” The Islamic State and al-Qaeda have encouraged followers to carry out knife attacks, and the Islamic State also has urged its supporters to use cars as weapons. In July, a man the militant group called a “soldier” killed dozens with a truck attack in France.
