Ukraine war: Kyiv’s forces moving towards occupied Kherson – Zelensky
July 23rd 2022
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky says his forces are advancing “step by step” into the occupied southern region of Kherson. Kherson city fell to Russia early in the war and sits on a strategic location west of the Dnipro river. On Saturday, UK defence officials reported heavy fighting near Kherson. The Ukrainian advance meant that Russian supply lines west of the river were “increasingly at risk”, according to their assessment. Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minster Iryna Vereshchuk urged Kherson residents to evacuate the city as soon as possible to avoid becoming trapped in the city during a counteroffensive in southern Ukraine. “It is necessary to do so for the Armed Forces of Ukraine not to endanger the civilian population during offensive operations,” she told state TV. Kyiv’s forces have been targeting river crossings in the region in an effort to stretch Russia’s supply lines.
On Saturday, an artillery strike hit the Daryivskyi bridge across the Dnipro river. And on Tuesday, they targeted Kherson’s Antonivskyi Bridge – one of only two crossing points controlled by Russia – with US-supplied artillery. Speaking to the state backed TASS news agency, the deputy head of the Russian backed Kherson administration admitted that if the strikes continue the bridge could collapse. UK officials have previously described the Antonivskyi Bridge as a “key vulnerability” for Russian forces and on Saturday said if “crossings were denied, and Russian forces in occupied Kherson cut off, it would be a significant military and political setback for Russia”.

Putin has ‘NO chance’ of Ukraine win – war ‘last step’ as Russian despot faces ‘reckoning’
July 24th 2022
His new movement has been instrumental in disseminating information about what is really happening in Ukraine and in organising peaceful anti-war protests. Mr Chebykin told the Express that Putin made a terrible strategic mistake of invading Ukraine and had no chance of fulfilling his imperialist ambitions. He explained: “I don’t think there is a chance for Russia to win in Ukraine under present conditions. “They could claim for propaganda purposes that they have accomplished their goals. “For example, if they seize the whole of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, they will say that was and had always been their war goal. “But it will be only a temporary victory because I am convinced Ukraine will reclaim its independence.
“There can be no talk of a final victory for Russia – there is no scenario where Putin can fully seize control of Ukraine and put in his man.” Mr Chebykin believes the war was launched by Putin in a futile bid to strengthen his political power in Russia. He argued it was a cynical move to distract the public’s attention from ever-increasing social and economic problems caused by the Putin regime. Recent years have seen wages and living standards fall and a continuing growth of corruption and despotism among the ruling elite. Mr Chebykin pointed out that the war had only exacerbated the economic hardships people had been facing and this was leading more and more people to question the political status quo.

Lawmakers want US military advisers sent to Ukraine
July 23rd 2022
Kyiv, Ukraine–The Biden administration should allow the Pentagon to deploy U.S. military advisers to Ukraine to help coordinate the billions of dollars of arms flowing into the country and to keep better tabs on the weapons, members of a bipartisan congressional delegation visiting Kyiv said Saturday. “I think we should do more,” Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., the first Green Beret elected to Congress, told Fox News after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “That said,” Waltz continued, “it should come with appropriate safeguards, with appropriate oversight and the only way we can get that oversight is to actually have some advisors in Ukraine helping their military with the planning and logistics.”
Asked if that includes sending U.S. military personnel to Ukraine, Waltz said it might. “It could be contracted, it could be civilian, but it could be military as well,” Waltz said. Those advisers running logistics and weapons transfers are currently deployed to Germany and Poland. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., also traveled to Ukraine Saturday as part of the delegation. She signaled her support for a larger American presence on the ground as well. “It would be good to have a logistics officer here to make sure that we understand and track the weaponry that we’re sending,” Sherrill told Fox News. Both lawmakers said the advisers would help beef up the presence at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv and assist in other areas. “I don’t think anybody is advocating for any [American] military on the front line, but helping with logistics, planning those operations, integrating the intelligence is incredibly important right now,” said Waltz.

Russian Official Admits to Missile Strike on Odesa
July 24th 2022
A spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Sunday that Russian missiles destroyed military infrastructure Saturday in the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odesa, a site that is vital for the exportation of Ukrainian grain. Maria Zakharova posted on her Telegram account “Kalibr missiles destroyed military infrastructure in the port of Odessa, with a high-precision strike.” Russia earlier had denied any involvement in the Saturday strike that came a day after Russia and Ukraine had signed agreements allowing Ukraine to ship millions of tons of grain out of its Black Sea port. It was not immediately clear what caused the reversal of facts from a Russian official. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blasted Russia for jeopardizing the deal.
Zelenskyy said late Saturday in his daily address, “Today’s Russian missile attack on Odesa, on our port, is a cynical one, and it was also a blow to the political positions of Russia itself. If anyone in the world could still say that some kind of dialogue … with Russia, some kind of agreements are needed, see what is happening. Today’s Russian Kalibr missiles have destroyed the very possibility for such statements.” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed a similar sentiment in a statement, issued late Saturday. “This attack casts serious doubt on the credibility of Russia’s commitment to yesterday’s deal and undermines the work of the UN, Turkey, and Ukraine to get critical food to world markets,” the top U.S. diplomat said. “Russia bears responsibility for deepening the global food crisis and must stop its aggression and fully implement the deal to which it has agreed.”
“For 12 hours we dared to hope for relief of the global hunger crisis from shipments of Ukrainian grain,” David Miliband, CEO and president of the International Rescue Committee, said in a statement, also issued late Saturday. “We have said it before; the war in Ukraine is a tragedy for Ukraine but also a global disaster for those in greatest need. This latest twist is as cruel as it is dangerous.” Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne quoted the Ukrainian military as saying the missiles had not caused significant damage, and a government minister said preparations continued to restart grain exports from the country’s Black Sea ports, according to Reuters. Boris hurls a grenade and tries out rocket launcher on visit to Army base
July 23rd 2022
Boris Johnson has been pictured hurling a grenade and taking aim with a missile launcher during a trip to a British Army base. The outgoing prime minister visited some of the 400 Ukrainian soldiers being trained in the UK this week, as Vladimir Putin’s bloody invasion reaches its 150th day. In a video shared on his official accounts, Mr Johnson – clad in full camouflage complete with tactical headphones – can be seen mingling with troops in North Yorkshire and trying out a range of weapons. It was the PM’s second military exercise this week, coming days after he was pictured going full Top Gun in the cockpit of a Typhoon fighter jet. The footage shows Mr Johnson overseeing training exercises in a mock urban environment. He can also be seen pulling the pin from a dummy grenade and hurling it, getting to grips with a machine gun and taking aim with a rocket launcher. As the camera pans over a Ukrainian flag lying next to the Union Jack, Mr Johnson says: ‘I’ve been meeting some of the 400 Ukrainian troops who are here being trained by our forces, getting ready to go and fight in Ukraine.
‘That’s part of a huge commitment we’ve made to train Ukrainian forces. We want to train about 10,000 of them over the next four months. ‘That comes on top of the investment we’re making in supporting Ukrainians with weaponry, 6,900 anti-tank weapons, 120 armoured vehicles and much, much else besides, including now the multiple launch rocket systems that together the Americans, Germans and others we’re providing really are starting to make a difference. ‘We hope to the course of that war starting to push back Putin’s evil attack on Ukraine. ‘I know that in the end the Ukrainian people are going to succeed. I know that the Ukrainian forces are going to succeed. ‘I’m very proud of the role that the UK has been able to play so far. But in the end, this is thanks to the bravery and the heroism of these Ukrainian troops.’ Mr Johnson spoke to Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, telling the Ukrainian president that UK support will ‘not waver’ regardless of who becomes the next prime minister.

British Stormer HVM Close Air Defense Vehicles Defend Ukraine’s Troops Against russia’s Aircraft
July 24th 2022
The Ukraine Weapons Tracker Twitter profile published photos indicating that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are already using Stormer HVM short-range anti-aircraft missile systems at the front to protect Ukraine’s troops from attack helicopters and low-flying aircraft. The authors of the post claim that the Ukrainian army received only five such short-range air defense systems from Great Britain. The main and important feature of the British short-range Stormer HVM air defense system is that this complex directs its missiles to the target in a semi-automatic mode, using a laser beam. And since this air defense system does not have its own radar, the British Stormer HVM is essentially “invisible” to the on-board radar radiation sensors on Russian planes and helicopters.
