A look at the latest FBI news on the Clinton email case

October 29, 2016

WASHINGTON — The FBI’s announcement that it recently came upon new emails that may be pertinent to the Hillary Clinton private email server investigation raised more questions than answers. FBI Director James Comey said in a letter to Congress on Friday that the bureau had discovered the emails while pursuing an unrelated case and would now review whether the messages were classified. The three-paragraph announcement, though vague in details, immediately resurfaced an issue that has dogged Clinton for her entire campaign — and will clearly persist for the remaining 10 days.

Some questions and answers:

___

Q: WHERE DID THESE EMAILS COME FROM?

A: The emails referenced in Comey’s letter emerged during a wholly separate criminal sexting investigation into former Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, one of Clinton’s closest aides, a U.S. official with knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press . Federal authorities in New York and North Carolina are investigating online communications between Weiner, a New York Democrat who is separated from Abedin, and a 15-year-old girl. It was not clear from Comey’s letter who sent or received the emails in question, what they were about, or what connection, if any, they might have to the earlier Clinton investigation.

___

Q: WHY IS THIS COMING OUT NOW, 10 DAYS BEFORE THE ELECTION?

A: Apparently because the emails were found very recently. In his letter to Congress, Comey said he had been briefed only Thursday by the investigators. There likely wasn’t a perfect solution: Releasing the letter now opened Comey to partisan criticism that he was dropping a significant development too close to an election. But keeping it under wraps until after Nov. 8 would surely have led to criticism that he was sitting on major news until after a new president had been elected. Comey has acknowledged there are no easy decisions on timing in the case. In an internal email sent Friday to FBI employees, he said he was trying to strike a balance between keeping Congress and the American people informed and not creating a misleading impression about the emails given their significance was not yet known. “In trying to strike that balance, in a brief letter and in the middle of an election season, there is significant risk of being misunderstood, but I wanted you to hear directly from me about it,” he wrote.

Clinton demands FBI release new email information: Saturday morning US election briefing

October 29, 2016

Hillary Clinton last night demanded the FBI disclose all the information it had on the latest batch of emails after the Bureau’s director, James Comey, announced the reopening of its investigation into her use of a private server. With the election only 11 days away Mr Comey’s intervention was the latest twist in the email controversy, triggering yet another day of high drama in what has been a roller coaster election campaign. Having previously decided that there were no grounds to prosecute the former First Lady, he stunned the Clinton campaign by saying that the new batch of emails were “pertinent to the investigation”.

Mrs Clinton was caught by surprise by the news, which was announced by Mr Comey in a letter to senior members of Congress. At the time she and her team were on a plane without internet access and unaware of the latest development. It emerged that the new emails were found during an investigation into illicit text messages sent to a 15-year-old girl by Anthony Weiner, a former congressman and husband of Huma Abedin, one of Mrs Clinton’s closest aides. Donald Trump, who has eaten into Mrs Clinton’s poll lead over the last few days, was swift to seize on the Mr Comey’s decision to resurrect his investigation.

Newly discovered emails relating to Hillary Clinton case under review by FBI

October 29, 2016

The FBI is investigating newly discovered emails related to Hillary Clinton’s personal server, its director has announced. The FBI had announced in July that its investigation into the Democratic presidential candidate’s private email server had concluded with a recommendation of no criminal charges in the matter, although James Comey, the FBI’s director, criticised Clinton as “careless”. But in a letter sent to members of Congress on Friday, Comey said new emails had been discovered in an “unrelated” case. “In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation,” Comey wrote. “I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.”

Comey added: “Although the FBI cannot yet assess whether or not this material may be significant and I cannot predict how long it will take to complete this additional work, I believe it is important to update your Committees about our efforts in light of my previous testimony.” At an evening press conference in Des Moines, Iowa, Clinton briefly addressed the letter to reporters. “The American people deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately,” she said. “The director himself has said he doesn’t know whether the emails referenced in his letter are significant or not.” “I’m confident whatever they are will not change the conclusion reached in July,” she concluded, alluding to Comey’s finding of “extremely careless” email practices but no criminal wrongdoing. Her rival, Donald Trump, also remarked on the letter, telling rallygoers: “The system might not be as rigged as I thought.”

Donald Trump Reacts to Hillary Clinton’s FBI News Conference: ‘Another Clinton Lie’

October 28, 2016

During a campaign rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday night, Donald Trump criticized his opponent Hillary Clinton for attempting to politicize the recent news that the FBI reopened its investigation into her email scandal, which was revealed earlier on Friday. Trump called the reopening of the investigation the “biggest political scandal since Watergate.” “It’s everybody’s hope that justice at last can be delivered,” the Republican nominee told supporters at the McGrath Amphitheater late Friday night.

FBI says emails found in Anthony Weiner’s sexting scandal may have links to Clinton probe

October 28, 2016

Just as Hillary Clinton appeared to be cruising to election day with the wind at her back, the FBI rattled the presidential race Friday by announcing it is again probing emails that might be related to her private server, rekindling a politically damaging controversy for Clinton and reinvigorating Republicans scrambling to hold on to congressional seats. The surprise word from FBI Director James Comey came after his agency discovered new communications on a computer jointly used by close Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, Anthony Weiner, a former New York congressman, according to U.S. law enforcement officials. Investigators came across the emails while investigating whether Weiner violated federal law when exchanging sexually explicit texts with a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina, one official said.

Comey wrote in a letter to Congress that the newly discovered messages could be relevant to questions of whether Clinton and her aides mishandled classified information while she was secretary of State. The emails were not to or from Clinton, and contained information that appeared to be more of what agents had already uncovered, the official said, but in an abundance of caution, they felt they needed to further scrutinize them. Because Comey had told Congress that the FBI had finished investigating Clinton’s server, he felt he needed to let lawmakers know that agents were looking into the case again in light of the recent discovery, the official said.

The bizarre day that blunted Clinton’s good mood

October 29, 2016

(CNN) Hillary Clinton was riding high. Then Anthony Weiner resurfaced. A string of strong swing state polls, an expanding battleground map and the end of the presidential debates had Clinton — and her aides — feeling good about the final days of the campaign. The normally careful candidate was dancing on television, celebrating her birthday with gifts of tequila and seemingly having fun during a campaign that, at times, seemed to be a slog for her. Then her nagging email controversy roared back. News broke on the flight between New York and Iowa that the FBI was reviewing new emails related to Clinton’s personal server, bringing an issue they had assumed was behind them back into the campaign. Later in the day, those same aides learned the emails being examined are part of an investigation into Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton’s longtime aide Huma Abedin. The two separated over the summer after a sexting incident.

Dumbfounded looks

Clinton’s flying campaign headquarters, though, kept the nominee, her top aides and the press cordoned off from the outside world. The plane’s unreliable WiFi wasn’t functioning at all on Friday, making it impossible for journalists to know what was going on outside their tube in the sky 30,000 feet over the Midwest. Before the news broke, Clinton’s top aides spoke to reporters in flight, touting the fact that their candidate planned to visit Arizona, a traditionally red state, and early voting that proved their base of women, minority and young voters were turning out in record numbers.

Clinton says FBI owes American people explanation, details about new email review

October 28, 2016

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 (UPI) — Hillary Clinton and her campaign were critical of the FBI’s top official on Friday for failing to explain and detail new emails the bureau said could be “pertinent” to its earlier examination of the private server she used while secretary of state — an investigation that resulted no charges this summer. At a news conference in Iowa, Clinton criticized FBI Director James Comey for failing to disclose exactly what the bureau is looking at with its review. “We are 11 days out from perhaps the most important national election of our lifetimes,” Clinton said in Des Moines. “The American people deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately.”

Clinton also said it’s “imperative” for the FBI to explain its actions because people are already voting. “We don’t know all the facts,” she added. “Even Director Comey noted that this information may or may not be significant, so let’s get it out.” Earlier Friday, Clinton’s campaign chairman released a statement that sounded disappointed and frustrated with the lack of details about the new review. “Upon completing this investigation more than three months ago, FBI Director Comey declared no reasonable prosecutor would move forward with a case like this and added that it was not even a close call,” chairman John Podesta said. “In the months since, Donald Trump and his Republican allies have been baselessly second-guessing the FBI and, in both public and private, browbeating the career officials there to revisit their conclusion in a desperate attempt to harm Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.”
