Suspicious devices found near New Jersey station

September 19, 2016

A suspicious device found near a New Jersey railway station exploded as a bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot, officials say. It was one of up to five devices found in backpack inside a rubbish bin near the station in Elizabeth, according to the city’s mayor. No-one was hurt. The discovery came after three attacks at the weekend – bombs in New York and New Jersey, and stabbings in Minnesota. The explosion in New York’s Chelsea area injured 29 people. In Elizabeth, New Jersey, police detonated a device on Monday following concerns it was a live bomb. “That was not a controlled explosion,” said Mayor Christian Bollwage, adding that the blast happened as a robot examining a device cut a wire.

Met Investigates Driver Confrontation

September 17, 2016

Met Police have confirmed they’re now investigation shock footage that showed an officer smashing the windscreen of a car in Camden. The clip has been shared thousands of times on social media and was shot on Friday evening at Weedington Road in NW5. In the footage, the policeman reportedly shouts at the driver to “get out of the car”, apparently having been told over radio that the driver is not qualified. Initially he uses his hands to try to break the driver’s window but when that proves unsuccessful, he then puls a baton out and uses it to smash the windscreen. Next he takes a knife out and cuts the windscreen away. During this the driver can be heard insisting: “I’ve got a licence and insurance.” Reports suggest that when the driver exited the car, one of the officers recognised him. In a statement on Saturday evening, the Met confirmed no-one had been arrested, saying: “The individual who uploaded the footage has been contacted by DPS officers.

At least 29 wounded in New York City explosion

September 18, 2016

At least 29 people have been injured in an explosion in the Chelsea district of New York City, officials say. The cause of the blast late on Saturday remains unclear. Mayor Bill de Blasio described it as “intentional” but said that there were no known terror links. He also said there was no evidence of a link to a pipe bomb explosion in neighbouring New Jersey hours earlier. None of the injuries is life-threatening but one is serious, the fire comissioner said. The explosion in New York occurred around 21:00 (01:00 GMT on Sunday). Witnesses said people ran in all directions following the “incredibly loud” blast.

EU border guards to start mid-Oct (2)

September 14, 2016

(ANSA) – Brussels, September 14 – The European Council on Wednesday gave final approval to regulations for the new EU agency of coast guards and border guards. The written OK paves the way for the agency to start up in mid-October, Council sources said. On June 22 the Council said it, the European Parliament and the European Commission had reached a deal on regulations (Law) governing a new agency of EU border guards and coast guards. The agreement was in line with a request by the EU leaders’ summit to wind up talks before the end of the Dutch duty presidency at the end of June. Police in England and Wales consider making misogyny a hate crime

September 10, 2016

Police forces across England and Wales are considering expanding their definition of hate crime to include misogyny after an experiment in one city that saw more than 20 investigations launched in two months. The initial success of Nottingham’s crackdown against sexist abuse has drawn national interest after the city’s police revealed that they investigated a case of misogyny every three days during July and August, the first months to see specially trained officers targeting behaviour ranging from street harassment to unwanted physical approaches. Several other forces have confirmed they are sending representatives to Nottingham this month to discuss the introduction of misogyny as a hate crime. Police and campaigners said the initial figures were broadly in line with other categories of hate crime such as Islamophobia and antisemitism but were likely to rise significantly as awareness increased. Dave Alton, the hate crime manager for Nottingham police, said: “The number of reports we are receiving is comparable with other, more established, categories of hate crime.

Britain and France Declare War on Germany

September 3, 1939

Britain and France are at war with Germany following the invasion of Poland two days ago. At 1115 BST the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, announced the British deadline for the withdrawal of German troops from Poland had expired. He said the British ambassador to Berlin had handed a final note to the German government this morning saying unless it announced plans to withdraw from Poland by 1100, a state of war would exist between the two countries. Mr Chamberlain continued: “I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received and consequently this country is at war with Germany.” Similarly the French issued an ultimatum, which was presented in Berlin at 1230, saying France would be at war unless a 1700 deadline for the troops’ withdrawal was adhered to.

From feast to farce: how the big Hinkley Point C party was put on ice

July 29, 2016

The total lifetime cost of the planned Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant could be as high as £37bn, according to an assessment published by the UK government. The figure was described as shocking by critics of the scheme, who said it showed just how volatile and uncertain the project had become, given that the same energy department’s estimate 12 months earlier had been £14bn. The latest prediction comes amid increasing speculation about the future of the controversial project in Somerset, whose existence has been put in further doubt by post-Brexit financial jitters. Hinkley has been a flagship energy project for the British government and in particular for the chancellor, George Osborne, who lobbied hard and successfully for China to take a stake in the scheme. Officials at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on Thursday confirmed the £37bn figure, but said it was provisional, set in September 2015, when wholesale power prices were low, and would not affect bill payers.

Some soldiers said they understood they were part of a coup when they saw civilians climb on tanks. NTV television has shown footage of a Turkish colonel and other soldiers being taken into custody at military headquarters.

Nice attack: Foreign Office ‘standing by’ to help Britons

July 15, 2016

The UK Foreign Office is “standing by” to help Britons in the French city of Nice, after a lorry crashed into a crowd killing at least 84 people. The lorry driver was shot dead, and President Francois Hollande said the incident was of a “terrorist nature”. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said at least one UK national was among those injured in the attack. Downing Street said Prime Minister Theresa May was being kept up to date on “this terrible incident”. A spokesman said Number 10 was “shocked and concerned” by the attack, which happened during Bastille Day celebrations in the capital of the French Riviera. A French flag is being flown above Number 10.
